Abraham’s Obedience
Genesis 22:3-6
Scripture · Genesis 22:3-6
3So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated. 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.” 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.

Without hesitation, Abraham obeys God’s command. Early the next morning, he sets out on the journey to the region of Moriah, taking Isaac and two servants with him. As they approach the place of sacrifice, Abraham instructs the servants to stay behind while he and Isaac go to worship.
Exegesis and Study
Immediate Obedience: Abraham’s immediate response to God’s command is remarkable. He does not delay or question but rises early to begin the journey. This demonstrates his unwavering faith and commitment to obeying God, even in the face of an incredibly difficult task.
Faith in God’s Promise: Abraham’s statement to the servants, “We will worship and then we will come back to you,” reflects his faith in God’s promise. Despite the command to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham believes that somehow, both he and Isaac will return. This may indicate his belief that God could raise Isaac from the dead or provide an alternative solution.
Practical Application
Trusting God’s Plan: Abraham’s actions challenge us to trust God’s plan, even when it requires us to take difficult steps in faith. True obedience often involves taking the first step without knowing exactly how God’s promises will be fulfilled. Like Abraham, we are called to trust that God will provide and that His plan is ultimately for our good.
Worship in Obedience: Abraham’s journey to worship in the face of such a severe test teaches us that obedience itself is an act of worship. By choosing to follow God’s commands, we demonstrate our love and reverence for Him, recognizing His sovereignty in our lives.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Trust in God’s Plan: Ask God to help you trust in His plan, especially when it requires you to step out in faith. Pray for the assurance that He is in control and that His promises will be fulfilled.
