The Command to Sacrifice Isaac
Genesis 22:1-2
Scripture · Genesis 22:1-2
1Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered. 2“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
The narrative begins with a startling command from God. After many years of waiting for the promised son, Isaac, God tests Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering on a mountain that He would show him. This command is shocking, not only because it involves the death of Isaac but because it seems to contradict God’s earlier promises to Abraham.
Exegesis and Study
The Nature of the Test: The passage begins by explicitly stating that God is testing Abraham. This indicates that God’s intention is not to harm but to examine Abraham’s faith and obedience. The test is designed to reveal the depth of Abraham’s trust in God and his willingness to obey even when the command seems incomprehensible.
The Language of Sacrifice: The phrase “your son, your only son, whom you love” emphasizes the intensity of the command. Isaac is not only Abraham’s son but the beloved child of promise. The command to sacrifice him as a burnt offering underscores the gravity of what God is asking and the faith required to obey such a command.
Practical Application
Understanding God’s Tests: Like Abraham, believers may face tests of faith that challenge their understanding of God’s will and promises. These tests are not meant to destroy but to strengthen and reveal the genuineness of our faith. It is crucial to approach such tests with a heart open to trusting God, even when we do not fully understand His purposes.
Obedience in Difficult Circumstances: Abraham’s immediate response to God’s command challenges us to consider our own willingness to obey God, especially when obedience requires sacrifice. True faith is demonstrated not only in trusting God’s promises but also in obeying His commands, even when it is difficult.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Strength in Testing: Ask God to give you the strength and faith to endure tests and trials in your life. Pray for the wisdom to see His purposes in the testing and the courage to obey Him fully.
Pray for a Heart of Obedience: Reflect on areas of your life where God may be calling you to greater obedience. Pray for the grace to respond to His commands
with trust and willingness, even when the path is challenging.
