The Question of Isaac
Genesis 22:7-8
Scripture · Genesis 22:7-8
7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
As they ascend the mountain, Isaac notices that they have everything needed for the sacrifice except the lamb. He innocently asks his father, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham responds with a statement of profound faith: “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”
Exegesis and Study
Isaac’s Innocence: Isaac’s question reflects his innocence and lack of awareness of the gravity of the situation. His question also serves to heighten the tension in the narrative, as the reader knows what Abraham is being asked to do.
Abraham’s Faith: Abraham’s response, “God himself will provide the lamb,” is a statement of deep faith. Even as he walks towards what seems like the inevitable, Abraham continues to trust that God will provide a way out, demonstrating his belief in God’s goodness and faithfulness.
Practical Application
Faith in God’s Provision: Abraham’s response to Isaac challenges us to trust in God’s provision, even when the way forward is unclear. In moments of uncertainty or difficulty, we are called to believe that God will provide what we need, just as He did for Abraham and Isaac.
Honesty in Uncertainty: While Abraham’s faith is evident, his response to Isaac also reflects a recognition of the uncertainty of the situation. It is a reminder that faith does not always mean having all the answers but trusting God even in the midst of uncertainty.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Trust in God’s Provision: Ask God to increase your faith in His provision. Pray for the ability to trust that God will provide what you need, even when you cannot see how.
Pray for Peace in Uncertainty: Reflect on any uncertainties or challenges you are facing. Pray for peace and trust in God’s plan, even when the way forward is unclear.
