Mark 4:35-36
Scripture · Mark 4:35-36
35When that evening came, He said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side.” 36After they had dismissed the crowd, they took Jesus with them, since He was already in the boat. And there were other boats with Him.
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
The story begins with Jesus and His disciples setting out on a journey across the Sea of Galilee. After a day of teaching the crowds, Jesus suggests that they cross to the other side of the lake. The disciples, many of whom were experienced fishermen, follow His lead, unaware of the dramatic event that would soon unfold.
“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’ Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.”
Exegesis and Study
The Initiative of Jesus: Jesus initiates the journey across the lake, which suggests His intentionality in leading the disciples into what would become a significant moment of revelation. This journey, while it appears to be a routine crossing, is divinely orchestrated to teach the disciples deeper truths about who Jesus is and the nature of faith.
The Presence of Other Boats: The mention of other boats accompanying Jesus and the disciples adds a
communal aspect to the story, indicating that others were witness to what would happen. This detail also reminds us that the experiences and revelations of God’s power are not limited to a select few but are meant to be shared and witnessed by a broader community.
Practical Application
Following Jesus into the Unknown: The disciples’ willingness to follow Jesus onto the lake, even as evening falls, is a reminder of the importance of trusting Jesus as He leads us into unfamiliar or uncertain situations. In our own lives, we are often called to step out in faith, trusting that Jesus is leading us even when we cannot see what lies ahead.
Recognizing Divine Orchestration in Everyday Life: Just as the disciples did not anticipate the storm, we often do not recognize the significant moments God is orchestrating in our own lives. This passage encourages us to be mindful that God is at work in our daily routines and that He often uses ordinary circumstances to reveal extraordinary truths.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Trust in God’s Leading: Ask God to help you trust in His leading, even when He guides you into unfamiliar or challenging situations. Pray for the faith to follow Him, confident that He is in control.
Pray for Awareness of God’s Presence: Reflect on the presence of God in your daily life. Pray for the ability to recognize His hand at work in both the ordinary and
extraordinary moments, and for the wisdom to see His purposes being fulfilled.
