The Storm Arises, Mark 4:37-38a

Scripture · Mark 4:37-38a

37Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was being swamped. 38But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke Him and said, “Teacher, don’t You care that we are perishing?”

Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.

As Jesus and the disciples sail across the lake, a fierce storm suddenly arises. The waves crash over the boat, and the disciples, despite their experience as fishermen, are overwhelmed with fear. Meanwhile, Jesus is asleep on a cushion in the stern, seemingly unconcerned about the danger.

Exegesis and Study

His own authority over creation. This detail also foreshadows the peace that Jesus will later bring to the situation, both externally by calming the storm and internally by addressing the disciples’ fear.
