God’s Choice of the Foolish and Weak
1 Corinthians 1:26-29
Scripture · 1 Corinthians 1:26-29
26Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast in His presence.

Paul continues by reminding the Corinthian believers that God often chooses what is foolish, weak, and lowly by worldly standards to accomplish His purposes. This is a deliberate act to nullify the things that the world values and to ensure that no one can boast before God.
Exegesis and Study
The Corinthians’ Background: Paul reminds the Corinthians of their own backgrounds, noting that many of them were not considered wise, powerful, or noble by societal standards. Yet, God chose them to be part of His people. This choice reflects God’s tendency to use what the world considers insignificant to demonstrate His power and to upend worldly values.
God’s Purpose in Choosing the Weak: By choosing the weak and foolish, God shames the strong and
wise, demonstrating that His power is made perfect in weakness. This also serves to eliminate any grounds for human boasting. If God accomplishes His purposes through those whom the world deems unworthy, then it is clear that the glory belongs to God alone.
Practical Application
Finding Strength in Weakness: The fact that God chooses the weak and foolish to accomplish His purposes is a source of encouragement for all believers. It means that our limitations, failures, and inadequacies do not disqualify us from being used by God. In fact, these very weaknesses may be the means through which God’s power is most clearly displayed. Practically, this calls us to embrace our weaknesses and to rely on God’s strength rather than our own.
Valuing Others as God Does: This passage also challenges us to view others through the lens of God’s wisdom rather than through worldly standards. We are called to value those whom the world overlooks or despises, recognizing that they too are chosen by God and have a unique role in His kingdom. This might mean intentionally building relationships with those who are marginalized, encouraging those who feel inadequate, or supporting those who are struggling.
Prayer Guide
Pray for a Heart of Humility: Ask God to give you a humble heart that acknowledges your own weaknesses and relies on His strength. Pray that you would find
confidence not in your abilities, but in God’s power to work through you.
Pray for God’s Perspective on Others: Reflect on how you view and treat others, especially those who are considered weak or foolish by the world’s standards. Pray for the ability to see others as God sees them, valuing them as He does and supporting them in their walk with Christ.
