Boasting in the Lord
1 Corinthians 1:30-31
Scripture · 1 Corinthians 1:30-31
30It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
Paul concludes this passage by pointing out that it is because of God’s work in Christ that believers are in Christ Jesus, who has become for them wisdom from God. This wisdom includes righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, leaving no room for boasting except in the Lord.
Exegesis and Study
Christ as Wisdom: Paul describes Christ as the embodiment of God’s wisdom, specifically in the form of righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Through Christ, believers are made right with God, set apart for His purposes, and redeemed from sin and death. This comprehensive work of Christ is the ultimate expression of God’s wisdom, far surpassing any human understanding or effort.
Boasting in the Lord: Because it is God who has accomplished this work in Christ, there is no basis for human
boasting. All that we are and have in Christ is a result of God’s grace, leaving no room for pride or self-reliance. Instead, believers are called to boast only in the Lord, acknowledging that all glory belongs to Him.
Practical Application
Living in Christ’s Righteousness: Recognizing Christ as our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption has practical implications for how we live. It means that our identity and worth are rooted in what Christ has done, not in our achievements or status. This frees us from the need to prove ourselves or seek validation from the world. Instead, we can live confidently in the knowledge that we are accepted and loved by God because of Christ.
Boasting in the Lord in Daily Life: Practically, boasting in the Lord means giving God the credit and glory for the good things in our lives. This can be done through our words—speaking openly about God’s work in our lives—and through our actions, by living in a way that points others to Christ. Whether in successes or challenges, our focus should always be on how God is at work and how His wisdom is being displayed through us.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Confidence in Christ’s Work: Reflect on what it means that Christ has become your righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Pray for the confidence to live in the truth of who you are in Christ, free from the need to seek validation elsewhere.
Pray for a Life That Boasts in the Lord: Ask God to help you live in a way that boasts in Him alone. Pray
for the grace to give God the glory in all things and to point others to His wisdom and power through your words and actions and life choices. Ask God to help you cultivate a heart that delights in giving Him the credit for every good thing in your life, big or small. Conclusion: The Wisdom of the Cross in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 The wisdom of the cross, as expounded by Paul in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, challenges the very foundation of human wisdom and understanding. While the world may view the message of the cross as foolishness, it is, in reality, the ultimate demonstration of God’s power and wisdom. Through the cross, God reveals a wisdom that defies human expectations—a wisdom that exalts the lowly, shames the strong, and transforms weakness into strength. This passage calls us to reevaluate our values, our understanding of success, and our approach to life. It challenges us to embrace the paradox of the cross, finding strength in weakness, wisdom in what the world considers foolish, and life in what seems like death. It also encourages us to boast not in ourselves, but in the Lord, recognizing that all we have and are in Christ is the result of God’s grace. As we meditate on the wisdom of the cross, may we be inspired to live in a way that reflects the radical nature of God’s wisdom. May we embrace the humility, self-sacrifice, and trust that the cross demands, and may we find our ultimate confidence and identity in Christ, who has become for us the wisdom of God—our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.
