The Foolishness of the Cross
1 Corinthians 1:18-25
Scripture · 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

Paul begins this passage by addressing the apparent foolishness of the message of the cross to those who are perishing. He contrasts this with the power and wisdom it represents to those who are being saved. The cross, which symbolizes weakness, suffering, and death, is the means through which God has chosen to reveal His power and wisdom.
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’”
Exegesis and Study
The Paradox of the Cross: Paul highlights the paradoxical nature of the cross. To the world, the idea that salvation could come through a crucified Messiah is absurd. Crucifixion was a method of execution reserved for the lowest criminals, and the notion that God’s Son would suffer such a fate was seen as both scandalous and foolish. Yet, for those who believe, the cross is the ultimate display of God’s
power to save and His wisdom in overturning the values of the world.
God’s Reversal of Human Wisdom: Paul quotes from Isaiah 29:14 to emphasize that God’s ways often confound human expectations. The cross is a prime example of how God destroys the wisdom of the wise and frustrates the intelligence of the intelligent. By choosing the cross, God demonstrates that His wisdom is far superior to human wisdom, which often relies on power, status, and intellect.
Practical Application
Embracing the Cross in Daily Life: Understanding the wisdom of the cross requires a shift in how we view power, success, and wisdom in our own lives. Instead of seeking recognition or relying on our own abilities, we are called to embrace the humility and self- sacrifice exemplified by Christ. This might mean choosing to forgive when it seems foolish, serving others without expecting anything in return, or trusting God’s plan even when it doesn’t make sense to us. The wisdom of the cross challenges us to live counter-culturally, valuing what God values and allowing His power to work through our weaknesses.
Witnessing Through Weakness: The message of the cross also empowers us to witness to others, not by displaying worldly strength or intelligence, but by demonstrating the transformative power of Christ’s love in our lives. When we are willing to share our own stories of weakness, struggle, and redemption, we point others to the true wisdom of God.
