5One night at Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “Ask, and I will give it to you!” 6Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day. 7And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in my father David’s place. But I am only a little child, not knowing how to go out or come in. 8Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a people too numerous to count or number. 9Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”

In response to Solomon’s sacrifices, God appears to him in a dream and offers to grant him whatever he asks. Solomon’s request for wisdom, rather than wealth, power, or long life, reveals his priorities as a leader and his deep sense of responsibility.
“At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, ‘Ask for whatever you want me to give you.’ Solomon answered, ‘You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?’”
Exegesis and Study
God’s Offer: God’s appearance to Solomon in a dream represents a significant moment of divine favor. By offering Solomon anything he desires, God tests the young king’s character and priorities. This open-ended offer underscores God’s willingness to bless Solomon, while also providing an opportunity for Solomon to demonstrate his understanding of his role as king.
Solomon’s Humility and Request for Wisdom: Solomon’s response is marked by humility and a keen awareness of the enormity of his responsibilities. He acknowledges God’s kindness to his father David and recognizes that his own position as king is a continuation of God’s covenantal faithfulness. Solomon describes himself as “only a little child,” not in terms of age but in terms of his perceived inadequacy to lead such a vast and important nation. His request for a “discerning heart” to govern the people and to distinguish between right and wrong highlights his commitment to justice and his desire to fulfill his role as king in accordance with God’s will.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Humility in Leadership: Reflect on Solomon’s humility in recognizing his limitations and dependence on God. Ask God to cultivate a similar humility in your own life, especially in areas where you have been given responsibility or influence.
Pray for a Discerning Heart: Ask God for wisdom and discernment in your daily life, particularly in making decisions that affect others. Pray that God would grant you the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and to act justly in all situations.
