10Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had made this request. 11So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this instead of requesting long life or wealth for yourself or death for your enemies—but you have asked for discernment to administer justice— 12behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been another like you, nor will there ever be. 13Moreover, I will give you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that during all your days no man in any kingdom will be your equal. 14So if you walk in My ways and keep My statutes and commandments, just as your father David did, I will prolong your days.”

God is pleased with Solomon’s request for wisdom and grants it to him, along with wealth, honor, and the promise of a long life if he remains faithful. This divine response establishes the foundation for Solomon’s reign and the prosperity that will characterize it.
“The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, ‘Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.’”
Exegesis and Study
God’s Pleasure with Solomon’s Request: God’s pleasure with Solomon’s request for wisdom highlights the
value God places on the desire to govern justly and wisely. Solomon’s choice to prioritize wisdom over personal gain reflects his alignment with God’s values and his commitment to serving the people of Israel according to God’s will.
The Promise of Wisdom, Wealth, and Honor: In response to Solomon’s request, God grants him unparalleled wisdom, promising that there will be no one like him in wisdom either before or after his reign. Additionally, God blesses Solomon with wealth and honor, rewards that Solomon did not seek but that are given as a result of his selfless request. This shows that when we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, other blessings often follow (Matthew 6:33).
Conditional Promise of Long Life: The promise of long life is conditional upon Solomon’s obedience to God’s commands, reflecting the covenantal nature of God’s relationship with Israel. This conditional aspect serves as a reminder that while God’s blessings are abundant, they require continued faithfulness and adherence to His will.

Pray for Obedience to God’s Will: Pray for the strength and commitment to walk in obedience to God’s commands. Ask God to help you remain faithful to His will, knowing that His blessings are often contingent upon our continued faithfulness.
