1Later, Solomon formed an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. Solomon brought her to the City of David until he had finished building his palace and the house of the LORD, as well as the wall around Jerusalem. 2The people, however, were still sacrificing on the high places because a house for the Name of the LORD had not yet been built. 3And Solomon loved the LORD and walked in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. 4Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.

The narrative begins with an overview of Solomon’s early reign, including his marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter and his efforts to establish his rule over Israel. Despite some initial compromises, Solomon demonstrates a genuine desire to seek God, as evidenced by his worship and sacrifices at Gibeon.
“Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem. The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord. Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places. The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.”
Exegesis and Study
Political Alliances and Religious Practices: Solomon’s marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter is indicative of the political alliances that were common among ancient Near Eastern monarchs. However, this alliance also foreshadows some of the challenges Solomon will face in balancing political expediency with religious fidelity. The mention of sacrifices at high places reflects a transitional period in Israel’s worship practices, as the temple in Jerusalem had not yet been built. While these high places were tolerated at the time, they later became associated with idolatry.
Solomon’s Devotion: Despite these complexities, Solomon’s actions at Gibeon demonstrate his sincere devotion to God. His offering of a thousand burnt offerings reflects both his wealth and his earnest desire to honor God. Gibeon, as the most important high place, becomes the setting for a significant encounter between Solomon and God.
