Hannah’s Faithfulness and Dedication of Samuel
1 Samuel 1:21-28
Scripture · 1 Samuel 1:21-28
21Then Elkanah and all his house went up to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow, 22but Hannah did not go. “After the boy is weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.” 23“Do what you think is best,” her husband Elkanah replied, “and stay here until you have weaned him. Only may the LORD confirm His word.” So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24Once she had weaned him, Hannah took the boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. 25And when they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli. 26“Please, my lord,” said Hannah, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD. 27I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him, 28I now dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.

After Samuel is born, Hannah remains faithful to her vow. She waits until Samuel is weaned, and then she brings him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh to dedicate him to God’s service. Hannah presents Samuel to Eli, the priest, saying, “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:27-28). This act of dedication is a profound expression of Hannah’s faith and devotion. She fulfills her vow with joy, recognizing that Samuel is a gift from God and that his life is to be dedicated to God’s purposes.
Exegetical Viewpoints
The Weaning Process: In ancient Israel, children were typically weaned at around three years of age. The fact that Hannah waited until Samuel was weaned before bringing him to the temple indicates that she wanted to ensure he was old enough to be away from her and to begin his life of service in the temple. This period of weaning also symbolizes the time Hannah had to bond with her son and prepare herself for the eventual fulfillment of her vow.
The Sacrifice of Dedication: Hannah’s willingness to give Samuel to the Lord for his entire life is an act of sacrificial faith. It demonstrates her deep trust in God and her recognition that Samuel’s life has a divine purpose beyond her own desires as a mother. This dedication is a powerful reminder of the importance of keeping promises made to God and of the joy that comes from fulfilling those promises.
Practical Applications
Honor Your Commitments to God: If you have made commitments or vows to God, be faithful in fulfilling them. Like Hannah, approach these commitments with joy, recognizing that they are part of your relationship with God and your expression of trust in His plans.
Dedicate Your Blessings to God: When God blesses you, consider how you can dedicate those blessings back to Him. Whether it’s a talent, a resource, or a relationship, offer it to God for His purposes, trusting that He will use it for His glory.
