Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving
1 Samuel 2:1-10
Scripture · 1 Samuel 2:1-10
1At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation. 2There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God. 3Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed. 4The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength. 5The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away. 6The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts. 8He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world. 9He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail. 10Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”

In response to God’s faithfulness, Hannah offers a prayer of thanksgiving, often referred to as Hannah’s Song. This prayer is a beautiful expression of praise and gratitude, celebrating God’s power, justice, and sovereignty. Hannah’s song reflects her deep joy and acknowledges that God is the source of all blessings and the One who exalts the humble. The prayer includes themes of divine reversal, where the lowly are lifted up, and the mighty are brought low. Hannah rejoices in God’s ability to bring about justice and to transform situations of despair into triumph.
Exegetical Viewpoints
A Song of Reversal: Hannah’s song echoes a common biblical theme of divine reversal, where God lifts up the humble and brings down the proud. This theme is seen throughout Scripture, particularly in the teachings of Jesus, and it highlights God’s concern for justice and His ability to change the fortunes of those who trust in Him.
Praise in Response to God’s Faithfulness: Hannah’s song is a model of how to respond to God’s faithfulness with praise. It demonstrates that when God answers our prayers or intervenes in our lives, our natural
response should be one of worship and thanksgiving, acknowledging His greatness and His work in our lives.
Practical Applications
Praise God for His Faithfulness: Take time to praise and thank God for His faithfulness in your life. Like Hannah, let your response to answered prayers be one of joyful worship, recognizing that every blessing comes from God’s hand.
Celebrate God’s Justice and Power: Reflect on how God has worked in your life and the lives of others to bring about justice and transformation. Celebrate His power to reverse situations and to bring hope and restoration where there was once despair.
