Moses and God’s Grace

Exodus 34:1-4

Moses and God’s Grace, Exodus 34:1-4

Scripture · Exodus 34:1-4

1Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2Be ready in the morning, and come up on Mount Sinai to present yourself before Me on the mountaintop. 3No one may go up with you; in fact, no one may be seen anywhere on the mountain—not even the flocks or herds may graze in front of the mountain.” 4So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals. He rose early in the morning, and taking the two stone tablets in his hands, he went up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him.

Moving to the story of Moses, we find another profound example of God’s grace in the Old Testament. In Exodus 34, Moses is called back to Mount Sinai after the incident of the golden calf, where the Israelites had fallen into idolatry while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments. Despite their sin, God instructs Moses to return to the mountain with new tablets, symbolizing a renewal of the covenant that the Israelites had broken. God’s willingness to renew the covenant and give the people a second chance is a powerful demonstration of His grace. It shows that God’s grace is not limited by human failure; instead, it offers the opportunity for repentance, restoration, and continued relationship.

Exegetical Viewpoints

the context of grace. Moses’ intercession on behalf of the people is a key factor in God’s decision to renew the covenant. This points to the broader biblical theme of mediation and intercession as vehicles through which God’s grace is extended to humanity.
