The Question of the Greatest Commandment
Luke 10:25-28
Scripture · Luke 10:25-28
25One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26“What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?” 27He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28“You have answered correctly,” Jesus said. “Do this and you will live.”

In Luke 10:25-28, a lawyer approaches Jesus with a question: “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus responds by asking the lawyer what the Law says, to which the lawyer correctly answers, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Jesus affirms his answer, saying, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” This exchange sets the stage for the parable of the Good Samaritan, which Jesus uses to further illustrate what it means to love one’s neighbor. The lawyer’s question, though framed as a test, leads to a profound teaching about the centrality of love in the life of a believer. Loving God and loving others are inseparable and are the foundation of the entire Law.
Deeper Revelations
The Centrality of Love: The lawyer’s answer, which summarizes the Law as love for God and love for neighbor, captures the essence of what it means to live a life that honors God. Love is not just one command among many; it is the command that undergirds and fulfills all others.
The Link Between Love of God and Neighbor: Jesus’ affirmation of the lawyer’s answer highlights the inseparable connection between loving God and loving others. True love for God is expressed in how we treat others, and our love for others is a reflection of our love for God.
Practical Applications
Evaluate Your Love for God and Neighbor: Reflect on how well you are living out the command to love God with all your being and to love your neighbor as yourself. Consider areas where you may need to grow in your love for God or in your love for others.
Live Out the Greatest Commandments: Make a conscious effort to prioritize love in your daily life. Let your love for God motivate you to love others more deeply, and let your love for others reflect your devotion to God.
