Perfect Love
Matthew 5:46-48
Scripture · Matthew 5:46-48
46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Jesus continues His teaching by emphasizing the distinctiveness of Christian love: “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:46-48). In these verses, Jesus contrasts the love that is common in the world with the love that He calls His followers to exhibit. Loving those who love us is easy and natural, but it is no different from the behavior of those who do not follow God. The love that Jesus calls us to is a love that extends to all people, regardless of their actions towards us. The call to “be perfect” is a call to completeness or maturity in love, reflecting the fullness of God’s love.
Deeper Revelations
Mature and Complete Love: The call to “be perfect” is not about moral perfection but about completeness in love. It is about growing into a love that reflects God’s all-encompassing love, a love that does not discriminate or exclude based on personal feelings or societal boundaries.
The Challenge of Christian Love: Jesus sets a high standard for love, one that challenges us to go beyond what is comfortable or convenient. This love is not based on reciprocity but on the unconditional love of God that we are called to emulate.
Practical Applications
Expand Your Circle of Love: Consider how you can extend love beyond your immediate circle of friends and family. Seek to build relationships with those who are different from you, those who may be marginalized or excluded, and those who may have hurt you in the past.
Aim for Completeness in Love: Reflect on areas in your life where your love may be incomplete or selective. Ask God to help you grow in love, so that your actions and attitudes reflect the inclusive and unconditional love of Christ.
