Moses’ Insecurity and God’s Patience
Exodus 4:10-17
Scripture · Exodus 4:10-17
10“Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Or who makes the mute or the deaf, the sighted or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.” 13But Moses replied, “Please, Lord, send someone else.” 14Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, “Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well, and he is now on his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth. I will help both of you to speak, and I will teach you what to do. 16He will speak to the people for you. He will be your spokesman, and it will be as if you were God to him. 17But take this staff in your hand so you can perform signs with it.”

Despite the miraculous signs, Moses continues to express insecurity about his ability to fulfill God’s call, particularly concerning his speech: “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent… I am slow of speech and tongue” (Exodus 4:10). In response, God reassures Moses that He is the creator of the human mouth and capable of enabling Moses to speak effectively. When Moses still hesitates, God shows patience and provides Aaron as a spokesperson to assist Moses. God says, “I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do” (Exodus 4:15). This passage highlights both Moses’ human weaknesses and God’s incredible patience and provision. Rather than dismissing Moses for his reluctance, God accommodates Moses’ insecurity by appointing Aaron as his helper, ensuring that Moses has the support he needs to fulfill his mission.
Deeper Revelations
God’s Patience and Understanding: God’s response to Moses’ insecurity reveals His patience and understanding of human frailty. Rather than rebuking Moses harshly, God reassures him and provides a solution to his fears. This underscores God’s compassionate nature and His willingness to work with us, even in our weaknesses.
God’s Provision for Our Needs: The provision of Aaron as a helper shows that God equips us with the resources we need to accomplish His purposes. When we feel inadequate, God often provides the support—whether through people, skills, or circumstances—that allows us to fulfill our calling.
Practical Applications
Bring Your Insecurities to God: When you struggle with feelings of inadequacy, bring those insecurities to God in prayer. Trust that He understands your weaknesses and will provide the support or resources you need to succeed.
Rely on God’s Provision: Just as Moses relied on Aaron’s help, be open to the ways God may provide support in your life. This could be through people, opportunities, or even the development of new skills. Embrace the help God offers and use it to fulfill your calling.
