26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, 33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!” 34“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month. 37For no word from God will ever fail.” 38“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.

The Nativity story begins with the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel appears to Mary to announce that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus.
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’ Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.’”
Exegesis and Study
Mary’s Humble Background: Mary, a young woman from Nazareth, is chosen by God to be the mother of the Messiah. Despite her humble background, she is highly
favored by God. This highlights God’s tendency to work through the humble and the lowly, using those whom society might overlook to accomplish His purposes.
The Angel’s Announcement: Gabriel’s message to Mary is one of profound significance. He announces that she will conceive and give birth to a son, whom she is to name Jesus, meaning “the Lord saves.” This child will be great, called the Son of the Most High, and will inherit the throne of David, fulfilling the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.
Mary’s Response: Mary’s response is one of faith and submission. Despite her initial fear and confusion, she accepts God’s will, saying, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” Her willingness to trust God and obey His call serves as a model of faith for all believers.
Practical Application
Trusting in God’s Plan: Like Mary, we are called to trust in God’s plan for our lives, even when it seems impossible or confusing. Her example teaches us the importance of submitting to God’s will and embracing the roles He calls us to, knowing that He will provide the strength and grace we need.
Recognizing God’s Favor: Mary’s story reminds us that God’s favor is not based on worldly status or accomplishments but on His sovereign choice and grace. We are invited to rest in the knowledge that we are loved and chosen by God, not because of what we have done, but because of His great love and mercy.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Trust and Submission: Ask God to help you trust in His plan for your life, even when it is difficult to understand. Pray for the grace to submit to His will and to respond with faith, like Mary.
Pray for an Awareness of God’s Favor: Reflect on the fact that you are favored by God because of His grace. Pray for a deeper awareness of His love for you and for the assurance that His plans for your life are good.
