Faith as the Victory
1 John 5:1-3
Scripture · 1 John 5:1-3
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of Him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
In his first epistle, John emphasizes the importance of faith in securing victory over the world. This victory is rooted in the believer’s relationship with Christ and is expressed through love and obedience.
Exegesis and Study
Faith in Christ as the Foundation: John begins by affirming that everyone who believes in Jesus as the Christ is “born of God.” This new birth establishes believers as children of God and connects them to the source of victory —Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ is the foundation of this victory, as it brings believers into a transformative relationship with God.
Love and Obedience: John links love for God with obedience to His commands, emphasizing that true love
for God is demonstrated through a life of obedience. This obedience is not burdensome because it flows from a relationship of love and trust. The believer’s love for God and for fellow believers is evidence of their faith and their victory over the world.
Victory Over the World: The “world” in John’s writings often refers to the system of values and beliefs that are opposed to God. By believing in Christ and living in obedience to His commands, believers experience victory over the world’s influences and temptations.
Practical Application
Living in the Victory of Faith: Faith in Jesus as the Christ is the key to overcoming the challenges and temptations of the world. This faith is not merely intellectual assent but involves a transformative relationship with God that is expressed through love and obedience. Believers are called to live out this victory by keeping God’s commands and loving others as Christ loved us.
Finding Joy in Obedience: John’s assertion that God’s commands are not burdensome reminds believers that obedience to God is a source of joy, not a heavy burden. When we love God, His commands become a natural expression of our relationship with Him, and we find fulfillment in living according to His will.
