5Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, 7because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.

Paul continues by exploring the contrast between the mind governed by the flesh and the mind governed by the Spirit. He emphasizes that those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires, leading to death. In contrast, those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires, leading to life and peace.
“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.”
Exegesis and Study
The Mind Governed by the Flesh vs. the Spirit: Paul presents a stark contrast between two mindsets: one that is governed by the flesh and one that is governed by the Spirit. The flesh represents the sinful nature and its desires,
which lead to spiritual death and separation from God. In contrast, the Spirit represents the new nature given to believers through Christ, leading to life and peace.
Hostility Toward God: The mind governed by the flesh is described as being hostile to God, refusing to submit to God’s law. This hostility is a fundamental characteristic of those who live according to the flesh, making it impossible for them to please God. In contrast, the mind governed by the Spirit is aligned with God’s will and is characterized by peace and life.
Practical Application
Setting Our Minds on the Spirit: To live according to the Spirit, we must intentionally set our minds on what the Spirit desires. This involves filling our minds with God’s Word, focusing on what is true, honorable, and praiseworthy, and seeking the things of God rather than the things of the flesh. By doing so, we cultivate a mindset that is aligned with the Spirit’s leading and that produces life and peace.
Resisting the Flesh’s Influence: We must be vigilant in resisting the influence of the flesh in our thoughts and actions. This may involve rejecting sinful thoughts, avoiding situations that tempt us to sin, and relying on the Holy Spirit’s power to transform our minds. By doing so, we can live in a way that pleases God and reflects our new identity in Christ.
