Exegesis and Study
Crucifying the Flesh: To belong to Christ means that we have made a decisive break with our old sinful nature, symbolized by the crucifixion of the flesh with its passions and desires. This crucifixion is both a one-time event (at conversion) and an ongoing process (sanctification) as we daily choose to reject the flesh and live by the Spirit.
Keeping in Step with the Spirit: Living by the Spirit requires us to actively keep in step with the Spirit’s leading in our lives. This means being attentive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, being responsive to His prompting, and aligning our lives with His will. It is a continuous, dynamic
relationship where we follow the Spirit’s lead in all areas of life.
Practical Application
Daily Surrender to the Spirit: To live by the Spirit, we must daily surrender our will to God and invite the Holy Spirit to guide us in our thoughts, decisions, and actions. This involves regular prayer, reading of Scripture, and a willingness to obey the Spirit’s prompting.
Rejecting the Flesh: Keeping in step with the Spirit requires us to be vigilant in rejecting the desires of the flesh. This might involve avoiding situations that tempt us to sin, cultivating habits that strengthen our spiritual walk, and being accountable to others in our Christian community.
Prayer Guide
Pray for a Life Led by the Spirit: Ask God to help you live by the Spirit each day. Pray for the awareness to recognize the Spirit’s leading and the courage to follow His guidance in all areas of your life.
Pray for Strength to Crucify the Flesh: Reflect on areas in your life where the flesh may still have influence. Pray for the strength to crucify these desires and to live a life that is fully surrendered to Christ.
