The Conflict Between the Flesh and the Spirit, Galatians 5:16-18

Scripture · Galatians 5:16-18

16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.

Paul begins this section by addressing the ongoing conflict between the desires of the flesh and the desires of the Spirit. He calls believers to “walk by the Spirit,” which is the key to not gratifying the desires of the flesh. The flesh represents our sinful nature and its inclinations, while the Spirit represents the new nature we have received through Christ.
