1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and exult in the surrender of my body, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. 6Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when the perfect comes, the partial passes away. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside childish ways. 12Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.

As we conclude our study of 1 Corinthians 12, we look ahead to the next chapter, where Paul will explore the “most excellent way”—the way of love. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul will argue that love is the greatest gift and the true mark of spiritual maturity. Without love, even the most extraordinary spiritual gifts are meaningless. This upcoming study will challenge us to reflect on the role of love in our lives and ministries and to seek a deeper understanding of what it means to live and serve in love.
Prayer Guide
Pray for a Deeper Understanding of Love: Ask God to deepen your understanding of what it means to love as Christ loves. Pray for the ability to live out this love in all areas of your life, especially in the use of your spiritual gifts.
Pray for Love to Be the Motivation Behind Your Actions: Reflect on your motivations in serving others and using your spiritual gifts. Pray that love would be the driving force behind everything you do, guiding your decisions and interactions. Conclusion: The Foundation of Love As we prepare to explore the “most excellent way” of love in 1 Corinthians 13, it’s essential to remember that love is not just an accessory to the Christian life; it is the foundation. Without love, the exercise of spiritual gifts is hollow and ineffective. But with love, these gifts become powerful tools for building up the Church and advancing God’s kingdom. As we conclude our study of 1 Corinthians 12, we should carry forward the understanding that the diversity of gifts in the Church is intended to unify and edify the body of Christ. However, as we move into 1 Corinthians 13, we will see that
love is the glue that holds everything together and gives meaning to the gifts we have been given. Let us approach this next chapter with open hearts, ready to be transformed by the truth that love is the greatest gift and the true mark of spiritual maturity. May we seek to cultivate this love in all we do, so that our lives and ministries may truly reflect the heart of Christ.
