The culmination of John’s introduction to his Gospel is found in verse 14: “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” This verse is one of the most significant in all of Scripture, as it encapsulates the mystery and wonder of the incarnation—God becoming man. The phrase “became flesh” indicates that the eternal Word did not merely appear to be human but actually took on human nature, entering fully into the human experience. The
Word “made His dwelling among us” (literally “tabernacled” or “pitched His tent among us”) recalls the Old Testament tabernacle, where God’s presence dwelled among the Israelites. Now, in Christ, God’s presence is fully and permanently with His people. John also highlights that in Jesus, we see the glory of God —glory that is characterized by grace and truth. Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father, embodying both the grace that offers salvation and the truth that sets us free.
Deeper Revelations
The Mystery of the Incarnation: The incarnation is a profound mystery—God taking on human flesh to dwell among us. This act demonstrates God’s immense love and commitment to humanity, as He enters into our world to bring redemption. The incarnation also affirms the value and dignity of human life, as God Himself becomes one of us.
Grace and Truth in Christ: Jesus embodies the fullness of God’s grace and truth. Grace offers us what we do not deserve—salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life—while truth provides the foundation for living in a way that honors God. In Christ, these two qualities are perfectly balanced, offering both compassion and correction.
Practical Applications
Embrace the Incarnation: Reflect on the significance of God becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Allow this truth to deepen your awe and gratitude for God’s love and sacrifice. Consider how the incarnation challenges
you to live with humility and compassion, following Christ’s example.
Live in Grace and Truth: Strive to embody both grace and truth in your interactions with others. Be gracious, offering forgiveness and kindness, while also standing firm in the truth of God’s Word. Seek to live a balanced life that reflects the character of Christ.
