1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. 4In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The Gospel of John opens with a profound declaration: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind” (John 1:1-4). These verses immediately establish the eternal nature and divine identity of Jesus, who is referred to as the “Word” (Logos). The phrase “In the beginning” echoes the opening of Genesis, linking the creation of the world with the new creation that comes through Christ. The Word, who was present at the creation of the world, is now entering the world to bring light and life to humanity. The imagery of light shining in the darkness (John 1:5) further emphasizes the transformative power of Christ, who overcomes the darkness of sin and death.
Deeper Revelations
The Eternal Word: The identification of Jesus as the Word (Logos) signifies His pre-existence and His active role in creation. This underscores the idea that Jesus is
not merely a historical figure but the eternal God who existed before time and through whom all things were made.
Light and Life: The concepts of light and life are central to John’s Gospel. Jesus is described as the source of both physical and spiritual life, as well as the light that guides and illuminates the path for humanity. His light is unquenchable, shining in the darkness and offering hope to a world in need of salvation.
Practical Applications
Acknowledge Christ’s Divinity: Recognize and worship Jesus not just as a moral teacher or prophet but as the eternal Word of God, fully divine and fully human. Reflect on the significance of His role in creation and how His eternal nature impacts your understanding of His authority and power.
Walk in the Light: Embrace the light of Christ in your daily life, allowing His truth to guide your actions, decisions, and relationships. Reject the darkness of sin and seek to live in the light, knowing that Christ’s light overcomes all darkness.
