John 16:8-11

Conviction of Sin, Righteousness, and Judgment, John 16:8-11

Scripture · John 16:8-11

8And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.

In His teaching, Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. This work of conviction is essential in revealing the truth of God’s holiness and the need for repentance and transformation.

Exegesis and Study

The Holy Spirit’s role in conviction serves to reveal the truth about sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Spirit exposes the reality of sin, particularly the sin of unbelief in Christ. He also reveals true righteousness, which is embodied in Christ’s

ascension to the Father, and the certainty of judgment, highlighting the defeat of Satan, the prince of this world.

Practical Application

The Holy Spirit’s conviction is not meant to condemn but to lead us to repentance and a deeper relationship with God. As believers, we should be attentive to the Spirit’s prompting in our lives, allowing Him to reveal areas where we need to grow in righteousness and turn away from sin.
