Jesus Questions the Disciples’ Faith
Mark 4:40
Scripture · Mark 4:40
40“Why are you so afraid?” He asked. “Do you still have no faith?”
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
After calming the storm, Jesus turns to His disciples and asks them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” This question challenges the disciples to reflect on their response to the situation and their understanding of who Jesus is.
“He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’”
Exegesis and Study
Fear and Faith: Jesus’ question highlights the contrast between fear and faith. The disciples’ fear in the face of the storm reveals a lack of trust in Jesus’ power and care, despite all they had witnessed Him do up to this point. Jesus’ question is not meant to condemn them but to prompt them to examine their hearts and to grow in their understanding of Him.
The Development of Faith: The disciples’ reaction shows that faith is something that develops over time and through experience. Their journey with Jesus is marked by moments of fear, doubt, and misunderstanding, but also by opportunities to grow in their trust and
recognition of who He is. This moment is one such opportunity, as Jesus invites them to move from fear to faith.
Practical Application
Confronting Our Fears with Faith: Jesus’ question challenges us to confront our own fears and to consider how they might be revealing areas where our faith needs to grow. In our lives, fear can often be a signal that we are not fully trusting in God’s power or presence. By recognizing this, we can turn to God and ask for the faith to trust Him more deeply.
Growing in Faith Through Challenges: Just as the disciples’ faith was challenged and refined through their experience on the stormy sea, our faith grows through the challenges we face. Instead of seeing difficulties as threats to our faith, we can view them as opportunities for God to strengthen our trust in Him.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Faith Over Fear: Ask God to help you overcome fear by growing in faith. Pray for the ability to trust Him more fully, even in the midst of difficult or frightening circumstances.
Pray for Growth in Faith: Reflect on how your faith has been challenged and refined through your experiences. Pray for continued growth in your faith, asking God to use every situation to deepen your trust in Him.
