Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
In response to the disciples’ plea, Jesus stands up and rebukes the wind and the waves, saying, “Quiet! Be still!” Immediately, the storm ceases, and there is a great calm. This miraculous act demonstrates Jesus’ authority over nature and His ability to bring peace in the midst of chaos.
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.”
Exegesis and Study
Jesus’ Authority Over Nature: The immediate calming of the storm at Jesus’ command is a powerful demonstration of His divine authority. In the Old Testament, it is God alone who controls the forces of nature (Psalm 89:9, Psalm 107:29), and by exercising this power, Jesus reveals His identity as the Son of God. This act is not just a display of power but also a revelation of who Jesus is—Lord over all creation.
The Great Calm: The contrast between the furious storm and the great calm that follows underscores the totality of Jesus’ control. This transformation from chaos
to peace is symbolic of the peace that Jesus brings into the lives of those who trust in Him, a peace that surpasses understanding and is not dependent on external circumstances.
Practical Application
Recognizing Jesus’ Authority: Jesus’ command over the storm invites us to recognize His authority in our own lives. No matter how chaotic or uncontrollable our circumstances may seem, Jesus has the power to bring peace and order. This passage challenges us to trust in His authority, believing that He can calm the storms we face, whether they are external situations or internal struggles.
Experiencing Christ’s Peace: The great calm that follows Jesus’ command is a reminder that true peace is found in Him. In our lives, this peace might not always mean the removal of difficulties, but it does mean that we can experience an inner calm and assurance, knowing that Jesus is in control. This peace comes from trusting in His presence and His power to sustain us through any storm.
