Paul’s Boast in Weakness
2 Corinthians 12:9b-10
Scripture · 2 Corinthians 12:9b-10
9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. 10That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
In response to God’s assurance that His grace is sufficient, Paul declares that he will boast all the more gladly about his weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on him. Paul’s attitude toward his suffering is transformed; instead of seeing it as a hindrance, he views it as an opportunity for God’s power to be displayed. He concludes by saying that he delights in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties, because when he is weak, then he is strong.
“Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Exegesis and Study
Boasting in Weakness: Paul’s decision to boast in his weaknesses is countercultural, both in his time and in ours. Typically, people boast in their strengths and achievements, but Paul flips this notion on its head. By boasting in his weaknesses, Paul highlights the paradox of
Christian life—that true strength is found not in self- sufficiency but in reliance on Christ.
Delighting in Suffering: Paul’s declaration that he delights in weaknesses and difficulties is a radical statement. It reflects a deep understanding that suffering, when endured in faith, can lead to greater intimacy with Christ and a more profound experience of His power. This delight is not masochistic but is rooted in the recognition that suffering is an avenue for God’s glory and for personal spiritual growth.
Practical Application
Reframing Weakness as an Opportunity for God’s Glory: Paul’s example challenges us to see our weaknesses not as liabilities but as opportunities for God to demonstrate His power in our lives. This might involve being more open about our struggles and allowing others to see how God is working through them, rather than trying to appear strong and self-sufficient.
Finding Joy in Suffering: While it may seem impossible to find joy in suffering, Paul’s perspective shows that joy comes from recognizing the spiritual benefits that can come from trials. This doesn’t mean denying the pain of suffering but finding a deeper sense of purpose and peace in knowing that God is at work, even in the hardest circumstances.
Prayer Guide
Pray for the Ability to Boast in Weakness: Ask God to help you see your weaknesses as opportunities for His power to be displayed. Pray for the courage to boast in your
weaknesses, not out of pride, but as a testimony to God’s strength in your life.
Pray for Joy in the Midst of Suffering: Reflect on the difficulties you are facing and ask God to help you find joy in them, not because of the pain they bring, but because of the way they draw you closer to God and allow His power to work in and through you. Pray for the ability to see your trials through the lens of God’s purpose and to trust that He is using them for your good and His glory.
