Paul’s Plea and God’s Response
2 Corinthians 12:7b-9a
Scripture · 2 Corinthians 12:7b-9a
7or because of these surpassingly great revelations. So to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Paul’s thorn in the flesh was so painful and persistent that he pleaded with the Lord three times to take it away. However, God’s response was not to remove the thorn but to assure Paul that His grace was sufficient and that His power was made perfect in weakness. This response shifts the focus from the removal of suffering to the sufficiency of God’s grace in the midst of it.
“Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”
Exegesis and Study
Paul’s Plea: Paul’s repeated pleas for the removal of the thorn reflect the intensity of his suffering. His response is a natural human reaction to pain—seeking relief. However, the fact that Paul’s request was not granted teaches an important lesson about the nature of prayer and the purposes of God.
God’s Grace in Weakness: God’s response to Paul is one of the most profound statements in the New Testament: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This teaches that God’s grace is not just a remedy for weakness but is sufficient in and of itself. It is in our weakness that God’s power is most clearly displayed, as it becomes evident that the strength we exhibit is not our own but His.
Practical Application
Embracing God’s Grace in Difficulties: Paul’s experience encourages us to embrace God’s grace in our own difficulties rather than solely seeking to escape them. This might involve shifting our prayers from asking for deliverance to asking for the grace to endure and the strength to glorify God in the midst of our struggles.
Understanding the Role of Weakness: The idea that God’s power is made perfect in weakness challenges us to reframe how we view our limitations. Rather than seeing weakness as something to be ashamed of or to hide, we can recognize it as the very place where God’s power is most evident. This can lead to a greater sense of peace and acceptance in the face of challenges.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Acceptance of God’s Will: Ask God to help you accept His will in your life, even when it involves ongoing struggles or unanswered prayers. Pray for the ability to see His grace as sufficient, even when you do not receive the relief you seek.
Pray for the Manifestation of God’s Power in Your Weakness: Reflect on areas of your life where you feel weak or inadequate. Pray that God’s power would be made perfect in those areas, and that you would experience His strength in the midst of your weakness.
