26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another.
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
Paul concludes this section by warning against becoming conceited, provoking one another, or envying each other. These attitudes are contrary to the life by the Spirit and disrupt the unity and love that should characterize the body of Christ.
Exegesis and Study
The Dangers of Conceit and Envy: Paul identifies conceit, provocation, and envy as attitudes that are destructive to community life. Conceit involves an inflated sense of self-importance, which leads to looking down on others. Provoking one another can lead to conflict and division, while envy involves resenting others for their gifts, success, or blessings. All of these attitudes are rooted in the flesh and are incompatible with the life of the Spirit.
Promoting Unity and Love: In contrast to these negative attitudes, life by the Spirit promotes humility, peace, and mutual respect. When believers are focused on serving one another in love, there is no room for conceit,
provocation, or envy. Instead, the Spirit fosters an environment of unity and encouragement, where each person is valued and supported.
Practical Application
Guarding Against Negative Attitudes: Practically, guarding against conceit and envy involves regularly checking your heart and motivations. This might involve asking yourself whether you are seeking recognition or comparing yourself to others. It also involves intentionally cultivating humility, being grateful for the gifts and blessings God has given you, and celebrating the successes and gifts of others.
Building Up the Body of Christ: To build up the body of Christ, focus on encouraging and supporting others rather than competing with them. This might involve offering words of affirmation, helping others to develop their gifts, and working together for the common good. When the Church is characterized by humility and mutual support, it becomes a powerful witness to the world.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Humility and Gratitude: Ask God to help you cultivate a heart of humility and gratitude, avoiding the traps of conceit and envy. Pray for the grace to see others through God’s eyes, valuing and celebrating their contributions without comparison or jealousy.
Pray for Unity and Encouragement in the Church: Reflect on the importance of unity in the body of Christ. Pray for your church or community to be characterized by love, humility, and mutual encouragement,
where each person is valued and supported in their walk with Christ. Additional Reflections: Serving One Another in Love (Galatians 5:13-26) Galatians 5:13-26 offers a powerful vision for life by the Spirit, where Christian freedom is expressed through love, service, and a life that reflects the character of Christ. Paul’s exhortation to serve one another in love is grounded in the reality that our freedom in Christ is not for self-indulgence but for building up the community in love. This life by the Spirit contrasts sharply with the works of the flesh, which are self-centered and destructive. Instead, we are called to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, embodying love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Throughout this passage, Paul emphasizes that living by the Spirit requires a daily choice to crucify the flesh, to keep in step with the Spirit, and to cultivate attitudes and actions that promote unity and love within the body of Christ. This is not a passive process but an active engagement with the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live in a way that honors God and serves others. Living Out the Call to Serve One Another in Love Paul’s instructions to the Galatians remind us that the Christian life is fundamentally relational. Our freedom in Christ should lead us to serve others, following the example of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve. This service
