5Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: 6Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross.

Paul then presents Jesus Christ as the supreme example of humility and obedience. He describes Christ’s voluntary descent from the glory of heaven to the humility of human existence, culminating in His obedience to death on a cross.
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
Exegesis and Study
The Incarnation and Humility of Christ: Paul begins by affirming the divinity of Christ—He was “in very nature God.” Despite this, Christ did not cling to His divine privileges but willingly relinquished them to take on human form. This act of self-emptying, known as the “kenosis,” is the ultimate demonstration of humility. Christ’s incarnation,
His becoming fully human while remaining fully God, is the first step in His journey of obedience.
Obedience Unto Death: Christ’s humility is further demonstrated in His obedience to the Father’s will, even to the point of death on a cross. Crucifixion was not only a painful and humiliating death but also one that was reserved for the lowest criminals. Christ’s willingness to endure such a death underscores the depth of His obedience and the extent of His love for humanity. His obedience was not passive resignation but an active choice to fulfill God’s redemptive plan.
