1Therefore if you have any encouragement in Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being united in spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Before delving into the example of Christ’s obedience, Paul begins this passage by calling the Philippian believers to unity and humility. He urges them to be of the same mind, having the same love, and being one in spirit and purpose. This call to unity is rooted in the character and example of Christ, which Paul will soon expound upon.
Exegesis and Study
Unity in Christ: Paul’s appeal for unity among the Philippians is grounded in their shared experience of Christ’s love and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. This unity is not merely a superficial agreement but a deep, spiritual
bond that reflects the nature of the Christian community as one body in Christ. Being “like-minded” involves more than just thinking the same way; it means sharing the same goals, values, and love for one another.
Humility as the Foundation of Unity: Humility is the key to achieving this unity. Paul contrasts humility with selfish ambition and vain conceit, highlighting that true humility involves valuing others above oneself and considering their interests as important as one’s own. This call to humility sets the stage for the ultimate example of humility and obedience that Paul presents in the person of Christ.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Unity in the Church: Ask God to bring unity among believers, both in your local church and in the global body of Christ. Pray that Christians would be united in love, purpose, and spirit, reflecting the unity that exists in the Trinity.
Pray for a Humble Heart: Reflect on the areas of your life where pride or selfish ambition may be present. Ask God to cultivate in you a heart of humility, enabling you to value others above yourself and to seek their well-being.
