1So the king and Haman went to dine with Esther the queen, 2and as they drank their wine on that second day, the king asked once more, “Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given to you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be fulfilled.” 3Queen Esther replied, “If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, grant me my life as my petition, and the lives of my people as my request. 4For my people and I have been sold out to destruction, death, and annihilation. If we had merely been sold as menservants and maidservants, I would have remained silent, because no such distress would justify burdening the king.” 5Then King Xerxes spoke up and asked Queen Esther, “Who is this, and where is the one who would devise such a scheme?” 6Esther replied, “The adversary and enemy is this wicked man—Haman!” And Haman stood in terror before the king and queen.

With the stage set by God’s providence, Esther finally reveals her true identity and the plot against her people during the second banquet with King Xerxes and Haman. In a bold and courageous move, she exposes Haman as the enemy who has sought to destroy the Jews, risking her life to save her people.
“So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther’s banquet, and as they were drinking wine on the second day, the king again asked, ‘Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be granted.’ Then Queen Esther answered, ‘If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king.’ King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, ‘Who is he? Where is he—the man who has dared to do such a thing?’ Esther said, ‘An adversary and enemy! This vile Haman!’”
Exegesis and Study
Esther’s Courageous Revelation: Esther’s revelation is the climax of her bold plan. Her willingness to identify herself as a Jew and to expose Haman’s plot puts her life at great risk. However, her courage is driven by a deep sense of duty to her people and faith in God’s protection. Her strategic patience pays off, as she waits for the right moment to make her case, ensuring that the king is fully engaged and sympathetic to her plea.
Haman’s Exposure: Esther’s identification of Haman as the enemy marks the beginning of his downfall. Haman, who had believed himself to be in a secure position of power, is suddenly exposed as a villain in the eyes of the king. This moment of exposure is crucial, as it shifts the balance of power and sets the stage for Haman’s ultimate demise.
