The Impact of Joseph’s Forgiveness on His Brothers, Genesis 45:16-20

Scripture · Genesis 45:16-20

16When the news reached Pharaoh’s house that Joseph’s brothers had come, Pharaoh and his servants were pleased. 17Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, ‘Do as follows: Load your animals and return to the land of Canaan. 18Then bring your father and your families and return to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat from the fat of the land.’ 19You are also directed to tell them: ‘Take wagons from the land of Egypt for your young children and your wives, and bring your father and come back. 20But pay no regard to your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’”

Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.

The news of Joseph’s reunion with his brothers reaches Pharaoh, who is pleased and offers to provide for Joseph’s family in Egypt. Joseph’s brothers, who once feared his wrath, now experience the unexpected generosity of both Joseph and Pharaoh. They are given the best of Egypt and are assured of their well-being during the famine. This act of forgiveness not only transforms Joseph’s brothers but also has a ripple effect on the entire family. What began as a story of betrayal and hatred is now a story of grace, mercy, and divine provision. Joseph’s forgiveness changes the trajectory of his family’s future, leading to their survival and flourishing in Egypt.

Exegetical Viewpoints

only reconciles his relationship with his brothers but also positions his entire family to receive God’s abundant provision in Egypt. This connection between forgiveness and provision highlights the broader biblical theme that God’s blessings often flow through acts of grace and reconciliation.
