Genesis 3:8-10
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
After their disobedience, Adam and Eve hear the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden and, in their shame, they hide among the trees (Genesis 3:8). This scene powerfully illustrates the instinctive human response to sin: shame and the desire to hide from God. Sin creates a barrier between humanity and God, leading to a sense of alienation and the fear of being exposed. God’s response to their hiding is both gentle and probing: “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9). This question is not about God’s lack of knowledge—He knows where they are—but is an invitation for Adam and Eve to step out of hiding and into a relationship of honesty and confession. It reflects God’s desire to restore the broken relationship, even in the face of sin. Reflection and Application: When we sin, our instinct may be to hide from God, to avoid confronting our guilt and shame. However, this passage encourages us to come out of hiding, to face our sin honestly, and to seek God’s forgiveness. God is always seeking us, even when we feel unworthy or distant from Him. Confession and repentance are the first steps toward restoring our relationship with God.
