5Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time. 6And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.” 8Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD. 9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.

In the midst of this widespread corruption, Noah stands out as a beacon of righteousness. Genesis 6:8-9 states, “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” Despite the surrounding wickedness, Noah’s faithfulness sets him apart, and he becomes the recipient of God’s grace. God’s favor towards Noah is not based on Noah’s perfection, but rather on his willingness to walk with God in a world that has largely turned away from Him. God’s grace is extended to Noah, leading to the preservation of his family and the continuation of humanity through the ark.
Exegetical Viewpoints
Grace and Righteousness: The phrase “Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord” is a key example of grace in the Old Testament. Noah’s righteousness is not the cause of God’s grace but the context in which it is received. Noah’s willingness to walk with God in a corrupt world is met with God’s unmerited favor, which leads to salvation for him and his family.
Walking with God: Noah’s faithfulness is described as “walking with God,” a phrase that indicates a
close, personal relationship with the Creator. This walk is characterized by trust, obedience, and a desire to align one’s life with God’s will, even in the midst of adversity.
Practical Applications
Embrace God’s Grace: Recognize that God’s grace is not earned by our actions but is a gift extended to those who seek to walk faithfully with Him. Be encouraged that, like Noah, you can find favor with God by living a life that reflects His values and principles.
Commit to Walking with God: Make a commitment to walk closely with God, even when the world around you seems to be moving in the opposite direction. Trust that God’s grace will sustain and guide you through challenging times.
