David’s Recollection of God’s Righteousness

2 Samuel 22:21-31

David’s Recollection of God’s Righteousness, 2 Samuel 22:21-31

Scripture · 2 Samuel 22:21-31

21The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes. 24And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity. 25So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight. 26To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless; 27to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd. 28You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. 29For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness. 30For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall. 31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

In the next section of his song, David reflects on God’s righteousness and His faithfulness to those who walk in integrity. David declares, “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me” (2 Samuel 22:21). David attributes his success and deliverance not to his own strength or wisdom but to his commitment to walking in God’s ways. He recognizes that God is faithful to those who are faithful to Him and that God’s righteousness extends to all who live uprightly. David further acknowledges that God’s dealings are just and fair: “To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd” (2 Samuel 22:26-27). This section of the song highlights the reciprocal nature of the relationship between God and His people—God rewards those who seek Him with a sincere heart and punishes those who act deceitfully.

Exegetical Viewpoints

God honors those who honor Him. This does not imply that righteousness earns God’s favor in a legalistic sense, but rather that living in alignment with God’s will invites His blessing and protection. David’s life, marked by obedience and repentance, is an example of how God rewards faithfulness.
