Abraham’s Test of Faith – The Command to Sacrifice Isaac
Genesis 22:1-14
Scripture · Genesis 22:1-14
1Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered. 2“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” 3So Abraham got up early the next morning, saddled his donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated. 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.” 6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together. 7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together. 9When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood. 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.” 13Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

Introduction One of the most challenging and profound moments in Abraham’s journey of faith is found in Genesis 22, where God tests Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice his son, Isaac. This test is a defining moment, revealing the depth of Abraham’s faith and his unwavering trust in God, even when faced with an unthinkable request.
Exegesis and Study
The command to sacrifice Isaac is deeply perplexing, especially considering that Isaac is the promised son through whom God’s covenant with Abraham is to be fulfilled. Yet, Abraham’s response is immediate and obedient. Early the
next morning, he sets out to the place God had told him about, accompanied by Isaac and two servants. As they approach the designated mountain, Abraham demonstrates his unwavering faith by telling his servants, “We will worship and then we will come back to you” (Genesis 22:5). Despite the command to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham believes that both he and Isaac will return. This statement is a profound expression of faith, hinting at the belief that God could even raise Isaac from the dead if necessary (as referenced in Hebrews 11:19). When Isaac questions where the lamb for the sacrifice is, Abraham responds, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:8). This response reflects Abraham’s deep trust in God’s provision, even in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances. At the moment when Abraham is about to sacrifice Isaac, an angel of the Lord intervenes, stopping him and providing a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute. Abraham names the place “The Lord Will Provide” (Yahweh Yireh), commemorating God’s provision and reaffirming his faith in God’s promises.
Practical Applications
Unwavering Trust in God: Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac, the very promise of God, demonstrates an unparalleled level of trust in God’s character and faithfulness. In our own lives, we are called to trust God completely, even when His commands or our circumstances seem to contradict His promises.
The Principle of Provision: Just as God provided a ram in place of Isaac, we can trust that God will provide for our needs in His time and way. When faced with difficult situations, we can rely on God’s provision and believe that He will make a way, even when there seems to be no way.
Prayer Guide
Prayer Focus: Ask God for the faith to trust Him completely, even in the face of difficult or confusing circumstances. Pray for the assurance that God will provide for your needs according to His perfect plan.
Prayer
“Lord, help me to have the unwavering faith of Abraham, trusting in Your goodness and provision even when I don’t understand Your ways. I believe that You are my provider and that You will meet my needs in Your perfect timing. Strengthen my faith and help me to walk in obedience to Your commands. Amen.”
