Light and Darkness
John 3:17-19
Scripture · John 3:17-19
17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 18Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.

The passage continues in John 3:17-19, where Jesus explains the purpose of His coming: “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” These verses highlight the mission of Jesus as one of salvation rather than condemnation. Jesus came into a world that was already under the weight of sin and condemnation, not to further judge it, but to offer a way out—to offer salvation and reconciliation with God. However, the response to this offer is critical: those who accept the light of Christ receive life, while those who reject it remain in darkness.
Deeper Revelations
The Purpose of Christ’s Coming: Jesus’ mission is one of salvation. God’s desire is not to condemn the world but to save it. This reveals God’s heart of compassion and His
longing for humanity to be restored to a right relationship with Him.
The Choice of Light or Darkness: The imagery of light and darkness in this passage underscores the reality of human free will. People have the choice to come into the light and receive the truth of Christ, or to remain in darkness, holding on to their sinful ways. The love of God does not force itself upon anyone but invites all to freely choose the light.
Practical Applications
Live in the Light: Examine your own life and consider whether there are areas where you are still holding onto darkness. Make the choice to step into the light, confessing your sins and embracing the truth and freedom that Christ offers.
Offer Hope, Not Condemnation: When sharing your faith with others, focus on the message of hope and salvation rather than condemnation. Reflect the heart of Jesus by offering love and compassion to those who are lost, pointing them towards the light of Christ.
