Naomi’s Plan for Ruth

Ruth 3:1-5

Naomi’s Plan for Ruth, Ruth 3:1-5

Scripture · Ruth 3:1-5

1One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek a resting place for you, that it may be well with you? 2Now is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been working, a relative of ours? In fact, tonight he is winnowing barley on the threshing floor. 3Therefore wash yourself, put on perfume, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the threshing floor, but do not let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. 4When he lies down, note the place where he lies. Then go in and uncover his feet, and lie down, and he will explain to you what you should do.” 5“I will do everything you say,” Ruth answered.

As the harvest season comes to an end, Naomi begins to think about Ruth’s future. She devises a plan to secure a stable and secure life for Ruth by seeking the protection and provision of a kinsman-redeemer. In ancient Israel, a kinsman-redeemer was a close relative who had the responsibility to redeem a family member in need, which could include marrying a widow to preserve the family line. Naomi instructs Ruth to go to the threshing floor where Boaz is working and to uncover his feet and lie down, a symbolic gesture that indicates a request for protection and marriage. Ruth agrees to follow Naomi’s instructions, showing her trust in Naomi’s wisdom and guidance.
