Love Your Neighbor as Yourself, Leviticus 19:15-18

Scripture · Leviticus 19:15-18

15You must not pervert justice; you must not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the rich; you are to judge your neighbor fairly. 16You must not go about spreading slander among your people. You must not endanger the life of your neighbor. I am the LORD. 17You must not harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Directly rebuke your neighbor, so that you will not incur guilt on account of him. 18Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

Leviticus 19:15-18 contains some of the most direct and impactful commands regarding how the Israelites are to treat one another: “Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly. Do not go about spreading slander among your people. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the Lord. Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” The command to “love your neighbor as yourself” is the culmination of these verses and serves as a summary of the entire law. This command, later echoed by Jesus as the second greatest commandment (Matthew 22:39), encapsulates the heart of God’s law—living in a way that prioritizes the well-being of others.
