Scripture · John 3:16-17
16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

One of the most famous and foundational passages in the Bible is found in John 3:16-17, where Jesus Himself articulates the essence of His mission—to save the world through His sacrificial love.
Exegesis and Study
The Motivation of Love: The passage begins with the profound statement that “God so loved the world.” The motivation behind Jesus’ mission is God’s immense and boundless love for humanity. This love is not conditional or limited but extends to all people, regardless of their background, sin, or status.
The Gift of Jesus: God’s love is expressed through the giving of His “one and only Son.” This gift is the ultimate demonstration of God’s love, as Jesus willingly came to earth, lived among us, and ultimately gave His life on the cross for our salvation. The sacrificial nature of this
gift emphasizes the depth of God’s love and the cost of our redemption.
The Promise of Eternal Life: The purpose of Jesus’ coming is clearly stated: “that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This promise is inclusive, offering salvation to all who place their faith in Jesus. It speaks to the hope of eternal life, not just as a future reality but as a present possession for those who believe in Christ.
Not Condemnation, But Salvation: Verse 17 underscores that Jesus’ mission was not to condemn the world but to save it. This reflects God’s desire for all people to be saved and His willingness to go to great lengths to provide a way for that salvation. It also highlights the difference between judgment and grace, with Jesus offering a way out of judgment through His sacrificial love.
Practical Application
Accepting God’s Love and Salvation: The message of John 3:16-17 invites us to personally accept God’s love and the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. This involves placing our faith in Jesus, repenting of our sins, and embracing the new life He offers. It’s a call to experience the fullness of God’s love and to live in the assurance of eternal life.
Extending God’s Love to Others: Just as we have received God’s love and salvation, we are called to extend that love to others. This includes sharing the message of Jesus with those who have not yet heard it and showing love through our actions. We are called to reflect God’s love in our relationships, communities, and the world at large.
