◆
Jesus as the Lamb of God
John 1:29-31
Scripture · John 1:29-31
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’ 31I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.”

In the Gospel of John, we encounter John the Baptist’s powerful declaration of Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” This statement reveals a crucial aspect of Jesus’ mission—His role as the sacrificial lamb who would bring redemption through His death.
Exegesis and Study
The Lamb of God: John the Baptist’s identification of Jesus as the “Lamb of God” is rich with Old Testament symbolism. The lamb was central to the Jewish sacrificial system, particularly in the Passover, where a lamb was sacrificed to protect the Israelites from the angel of death (Exodus 12). By calling Jesus the Lamb of God, John is pointing to Jesus’ role as the ultimate Passover lamb, whose
sacrifice would take away the sins of the world. This title emphasizes Jesus’ mission to provide atonement and reconciliation between God and humanity.
Taking Away the Sin of the World: The phrase “takes away the sin of the world” highlights the universal scope of Jesus’ redemptive work. Unlike the Old Testament sacrifices, which had to be repeated and were limited to the Jewish people, Jesus’ sacrifice would be once and for all, sufficient to remove the sins of all people, for all time. This underscores the inclusivity of the Gospel and the breadth of God’s saving grace.
John’s Role in Revealing Jesus: John the Baptist acknowledges that his ministry of baptism was designed to reveal Jesus to Israel. His testimony prepares the way for Jesus’ public ministry, and his recognition of Jesus as the preeminent one—“because he was before me”—affirms Jesus’ eternal nature and divine origin.
Practical Application
Understanding Jesus’ Sacrifice: Recognizing Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world deepens our appreciation for the sacrifice He made on our behalf. We are called to respond with gratitude and worship, understanding that our salvation is a gift made possible through Jesus’ atoning death.
Sharing the Message of Redemption: The inclusivity of Jesus’ sacrifice compels us to share the message of redemption with others. Just as John the Baptist pointed others to Jesus, we are called to be witnesses, proclaiming the good news that through Jesus, all people can find forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
