19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 20“Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the Child’s life are now dead.” 21So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he learned that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

The Nativity story concludes with the return of the Holy Family to Israel after the death of Herod. They settle in Nazareth, where Jesus grows up and is prepared for His public ministry.
Exegesis and Study
The Return to Israel: After the death of Herod, the angel instructs Joseph to return to Israel. However, due to the continued threat posed by Herod’s son Archelaus,
Joseph is guided to settle in Nazareth, in the region of Galilee. This move fulfills the prophecy that the Messiah would be called a Nazarene, though this prophecy is not directly quoted from the Old Testament but rather reflects the prophetic expectation that the Messiah would be despised and humble, as Nazareth was considered an insignificant town.
Jesus’ Growth in Nazareth: Luke’s Gospel notes that Jesus grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him. These years in Nazareth were a time of preparation, where Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, living a life of humility and obedience as He prepared for His public ministry.
Practical Application
Faithfulness in Ordinary Life: The years Jesus spent in Nazareth remind us that God values faithfulness in the ordinary aspects of life. Before beginning His public ministry, Jesus lived a simple, obedient life in a small town, demonstrating that every part of our lives, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has value in God’s eyes.
Embracing Humility: The fact that Jesus was known as a Nazarene highlights the humility of His earthly life. We are called to embrace humility in our own lives, recognizing that true greatness is found in serving others and living in obedience to God’s will, just as Jesus did.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Faithfulness in Everyday Life: Ask God to help you be faithful in the ordinary tasks and responsibilities of life. Pray for the grace to serve Him with
humility and diligence, even in the mundane aspects of daily living.
Pray for a Humble Heart: Reflect on the humility of Jesus, who was willing to be known as a Nazarene. Pray for a humble heart that seeks to honor God through service and obedience, rather than seeking recognition or status. Conclusion: The Significance of the Nativity The Nativity story is not just a recounting of historical events; it is the beginning of the greatest story ever told—the story of God’s love for humanity, manifested in the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. Each part of the Nativity narrative, from the Annunciation to the visit of the Magi, is rich with meaning and significance, pointing to the fulfillment of God’s promises and the inauguration of His redemptive plan. As we reflect on the birth of Jesus, we are invited to respond with faith, humility, and joy. Like Mary, we are called to trust in God’s plan for our lives. Like the shepherds and the Magi, we are invited to seek Jesus and share the good news of His coming with others. And like Joseph, we are challenged to obey God’s guidance, even when it leads us into difficult or unexpected places. The birth of Jesus is the ultimate demonstration of God’s love, and it calls us to live lives that reflect the reality of His incarnation. As we conclude this week’s study, may we carry the message of the Nativity with us, allowing it to shape our hearts and guide our lives as we follow the One who came to save us.

Pray for a Life that Reflects Christ’s Love: Ask God to help you live in a way that reflects the love, humility, and faith demonstrated in the Nativity. Pray for the strength to follow Jesus faithfully, sharing His love with the world and living in the light of His incarnation. May the story of Jesus’ birth continue to inspire and guide you as you walk with Him, not just during this season, but every day of your life.
