6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:6-7 not only foretells the birth of the Messiah but also provides a vivid picture of the Messiah’s mission to establish peace and justice. This mission is central to understanding Jesus’ role as the promised Savior and King.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
Exegesis and Study
The Government on His Shoulders: The phrase “the government will be on his shoulders” indicates that the Messiah will carry the responsibility of leadership. This is not just political leadership but a divine governance that will extend over all creation. The Messiah’s reign is characterized
by wisdom, strength, and eternal care, as reflected in the titles given to Him.
Endless Peace and Justice: The prophecy highlights that the Messiah’s reign will be marked by endless peace and justice. Unlike earthly rulers whose power is temporary and often flawed, the Messiah’s government will be perfect and eternal. He will establish a kingdom where justice and righteousness prevail, reflecting the very nature of God.
The Zeal of the Lord: The final phrase, “The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this,” underscores that the fulfillment of this prophecy is guaranteed by God’s own passion and determination. It is not dependent on human effort but on God’s sovereign will and power. This provides assurance that the Messiah’s mission will succeed and that His kingdom will be established.

By doing so, we reflect the values of Christ’s eternal kingdom and contribute to its advancement.
Trusting in the Fulfillment of God’s Promises: The prophecy assures us that God’s promises are certain and that His plan will be accomplished. We can trust that, despite the brokenness of the world, God’s kingdom will ultimately prevail.
