The Hope of Final Victory
Revelation 21:1-4
Scripture · Revelation 21:1-4
1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. 4‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.”

While we experience Christ’s victory in the present, Scripture also points us toward the final victory that will be fully realized at His return. Revelation gives us a glimpse of this ultimate triumph, where evil is finally and completely defeated.
Exegesis and Study
The New Creation: John’s vision of a new heaven and a new earth represents the final renewal of all things. This new creation is free from the effects of sin and death, and it is where God’s people will dwell with Him
forever. The imagery of the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, emphasizes the community of believers who are united with God in perfect fellowship.
God’s Dwelling with His People: The promise that God will dwell with His people is the fulfillment of the entire biblical narrative. From the Garden of Eden to the tabernacle and temple, God’s desire has always been to dwell with His people. In the new creation, this desire is fully realized, as God Himself will be with us, wiping away every tear and removing all pain and suffering.
The End of Death and Sorrow: The final victory of Christ means the end of death, mourning, crying, and pain. These former things will pass away, replaced by the eternal joy and peace of God’s presence. This passage provides a powerful hope for believers, assuring us that the struggles of this life are temporary and will one day be completely eradicated.
Practical Application
Living with the Hope of Final Victory: The promise of a new creation gives us hope as we navigate the challenges of this life. Knowing that God will one day make all things new enables us to endure suffering with patience and to live with an eternal perspective. This hope should also motivate us to live in a way that honors God and prepares us for the world to come.
Encouraging Others with the Hope of Victory: As we live in the hope of final victory, we are also called to encourage others with this hope. This might involve sharing the Gospel with those who are searching for meaning and hope, or comforting those who are grieving with the assurance of God’s promises.
Prayer Guide
Pray for the Hope of Final Victory: Ask God to fill you with the hope of His final victory and the renewal of all things. Pray for the ability to live with an eternal perspective, trusting in His promises.
Pray for Opportunities to Share This Hope: Reflect on how you can share the hope of final victory with others. Pray for opportunities to witness to God’s promise of a new creation and to offer comfort to those who are hurting.
