Responding to Evil with Good
Romans 12:17-19
Scripture · Romans 12:17-19
17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
Paul’s teachings in this section address the natural human inclination to seek revenge when wronged. Instead, he calls believers to a higher standard—responding to evil with good and leaving justice in the hands of God.
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
Exegesis and Study
Rejecting Revenge: Paul’s command not to repay evil for evil is a direct challenge to the natural human desire for retribution. Instead of seeking revenge, believers are called to respond in a way that reflects Christ’s teachings and character. This approach not only avoids escalating conflicts but also opens the door to reconciliation and healing.
Living Peaceably: Paul acknowledges that while living at peace with everyone is an ideal, it may not always be
possible. However, he urges believers to do everything within their power to promote peace and harmony. This means being willing to forgive, to seek understanding, and to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
Leaving Justice to God: The instruction to leave room for God’s wrath emphasizes the importance of trusting God’s justice. Paul quotes Deuteronomy 32:35 to remind believers that vengeance belongs to God alone. This teaches us to relinquish our desire for personal justice and to trust that God will handle all matters of justice in His perfect timing and wisdom.
Practical Application
Resisting the Urge for Revenge: When wronged, it’s natural to want to retaliate. However, Paul calls us to a different standard—one that refuses to repay evil with evil. This might involve choosing to forgive rather than retaliate, or responding to harsh words with kindness. By doing so, we reflect the grace and mercy of Christ.
Pursuing Peace: While it may not always be possible to live at peace with everyone, we are called to make every effort to do so. This involves being proactive in resolving conflicts, extending grace to others, and seeking reconciliation wherever possible. It also means being mindful of how our actions and words affect others, striving to build rather than tear down.
Trusting God’s Justice: Trusting God to avenge wrongs requires faith in His sovereignty and goodness. Instead of taking matters into our own hands, we can find peace in knowing that God sees all and will bring about justice in His time. This trust frees us from the burden of
seeking revenge and allows us to focus on living out God’s love.
