The Third Temptation – Worshiping Satan for Earthly Power
Matthew 4:8-10
Scripture · Matthew 4:8-10
8Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9“All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.” 10“Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

In the third and final temptation, Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if He will bow down and worship him.
Exegesis and Study
The Appeal to Power and Glory: In this temptation, Satan offers Jesus worldly power and glory in exchange for worship. This is a direct attempt to divert Jesus from His mission of obedience to God and to lure Him into idolatry. The offer is striking because Satan claims to have the authority to bestow the kingdoms of the world, yet Jesus knows that true power and glory belong to God alone. The temptation here is to gain power by illegitimate means,
bypassing the suffering and sacrifice that Jesus was destined to endure for humanity’s redemption.
The Temptation of Idolatry: The core of this temptation is idolatry—placing something or someone else in the position that only God should occupy. Satan’s proposition would have required Jesus to bow down and worship him, which would have been a direct violation of the first commandment and a rejection of God’s sovereignty. It highlights the ultimate test of loyalty and the seductive nature of idolatry, which seeks to replace God with worldly gain or power.
Jesus’ Response – Absolute Loyalty to God: Jesus’ response is swift and decisive: “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” By quoting Deuteronomy 6:13, Jesus affirms His unwavering commitment to worship and serve God alone. He recognizes that true worship is reserved for God, and no temptation, no matter how enticing, can sway His devotion.
Practical Application
Resisting the Temptation of Idolatry: In our own lives, we face temptations to idolize things like power, success, money, or even relationships. These idols can subtly take God’s place in our hearts if we are not vigilant. We must examine our priorities regularly and ensure that our worship and loyalty are directed solely toward God.
Understanding the True Source of Power and Glory: Like Jesus, we must recognize that true power and glory come from God alone. Seeking power or success by compromising our values or worshipping anything other than God leads to spiritual destruction. We are called to trust
in God’s timing and His plan for our lives, knowing that He alone holds ultimate authority.
Prayer Guide
Pray for the Strength to Resist Idolatry: Ask God to help you identify and resist any form of idolatry in your life. Pray for a heart that is fully devoted to worshipping and serving Him alone.
Pray for Discernment in Seeking Power and Success: Reflect on your desires for power, success, or influence. Pray for discernment to seek these things in a way that honors God and aligns with His will, rather than compromising your faith.
