14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed,
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
Paul continues by describing the breastplate of righteousness, which is the next piece of armor that the believer is to put on.
Exegesis and Study
The Breastplate’s Role: The breastplate in Roman armor protected the vital organs, particularly the heart. Spiritually, the breastplate of righteousness represents the righteousness of Christ that protects the believer’s heart against the accusations and attacks of the enemy. This righteousness is not our own but is imputed to us through faith in Christ.
Living Righteously: While the breastplate represents the righteousness of Christ, it also calls believers to live righteously. Righteous living guards our hearts and minds against the enemy’s schemes. It involves making choices that align with God’s standards and reflecting Christ’s character in our actions.
Practical Application
Resting in Christ’s Righteousness: The breastplate of righteousness reminds us that our standing before God is based on Christ’s righteousness, not our own. This assurance protects us from the enemy’s accusations and gives us confidence in our relationship with God. We are called to rest in the finished work of Christ and to live in the light of His righteousness.
Pursuing Righteous Living: Putting on the breastplate of righteousness also involves pursuing a life of holiness and obedience to God’s commands. This pursuit not only honors God but also fortifies us against the temptations and attacks of the enemy. Righteous living is both a defense and an offense in spiritual warfare.
